Settlement Agreement

On May 30 2005, the Government of Canada appointed Mr. Iacobucci, an ex-Supreme Court judge, to negotiate with former students representatives and develop an agreement for a resolution of the legacy of residential schools. The Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement was the largest class action settlement in Canadian history.

The Settlement Agreement will offer Inuit, Métis and First Nations Former Students who resided at Federal Residential Schools the following benefits:

Common Experience Payment (CEP)

Independent Assessment Process (IAP)

Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC)

How was NTI involved in the settlement?

  • NTI participated in the negotiations, along with the Assembly of First Nations, the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, Makivik Corporation, lawyers for former students and lawyers representing churches
  • NTI started a lawsuit on behalf of Inuit former students in late summer 2005
  • NTI conducted a survey of former students in the fall of 2005
Inuit economic, social and cultural well-being through the implementation of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement.
