Truth and Reconciliation Commission

The  Truth and Reconciliation Commission was established June 1, 2008 to promote public awareness of the legacy of Residential Schools and to record and preserve the stories of Former Students.  The Truth and Reconciliation Commission has a budget of $60 million for the following initiatives:

  • Provide a setting for former students, their families and communities in which to share their experiences.
  • Prepare a complete historical record on the policies and operations of residential schools.
  • Complete a public report including recommendations to the parties of the Settlement Agreement.
  • Establish a national research centre that will be a lasting resource about the Indian Residential School legacy.
  • Encourage public education and awareness by hosting national events in different regions across Canada.
  • Support community events designed by individual communities to meet their unique needs.
  • Fund memorials to commemorate the legacy of Residential Schools.
